Mom has a Noma lawn tractor which appears to be made by MTD. It has a hydrostatic transmission (if that's what you mean by automatic). It has a 14HP Kohler engine and a 42" deck. It really speeds up mowing because there's no shifting or clutching - one lever selects an "infinite" number of forward and reverse speeds. It also has 4wheel steering (the back wheels turn on sharp turns), so it can mow around trees etc. Sorry I don't know about towing with hydrostatic. I don't know which engine is better, but I've heared that its good to have an engine with features like cast iron cylindar, oil filter, and ball or roller bearings.
