Without the internet and various other information sources, and the freedom of information act, you only naively thought you had real freedom. How about the Mc Carthy witch hunt era, where we had a Commie under every bush, and every gay was a Commie suspect? How about the army troops who were used for nuclear testing to see how much damage it did to their bodies, and then their medical records were mysteriousy lost? How about the J Edgar Hoover FBI that had no bounds to what they could do? How about our vets in VA Hospitals who were used as guinnea pigs for drugs and proceedures without their permission? How about the FBI wiretaps of private phones and censuring of our US mail? I know all of these things to be FACT, our household experienced them all.
