On my grandfathers farm here there was an old barn, built on what is said to be the highest point of land in two counties. No one is sure who built it, but some parts were held together with wooden pins. It was used by him as a cow barn, one of the previous owners had converted it to this. I was trying to get the last four acres of late corn planted using the IH 140 and an Allis Chalmer chain lift planter. When I got to the far end of the field and turned around I saw a thunderstorm rising up in the northwest. I had two rows left to get in to finish, it was the shortest route to the barn so I decided to plant those last rows. About halfway down the field, I realized this storm was moving much faster than the storms of the past. When I got to the bottom end of the field I lifted the planter, shifted into third and headed to the barn. When I passed the old horse barn and the persimmon tree everything broke loose. Instead of just leaving the tractor partly outside there - I was determined to get the tractor in the cow barn. I was hit by sticks, covered with wet leaves, then some hailstones. The vent boards on the cow barn were flapping like legs trying to move the barn away. Just as I got to the doorway the two tobacco sticks I had holding the doors open both moved away and both doors slammed shut. Unable to stop, I crashed right thru them and into the barn. Then the rain hit, severe lightning and then everything settled down. I had two flat tires and a bad wheel bearing to fix. A storm finally got the old barn, but I will never forget that ride up the hill.

Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
