I would first check condition of the battery Make sure (ALL) ground connections to frame and Battery connections are clean and tight. the plug on the back of the toggle need to be corrosion free as well.
If it operates good when cold another possibility is the airspace is out of adjustment on clutch itself If not close enough it may be affected by engine heat. therefore widening gap because of metal expansion.
I believe the book does call for .12 but if battery isn't up to standards I have taken them down to .04 as long as the plate and magnet doesn't try to rub.--- hope this helps
