I put 1 on a d17 2 years ago and I think I stuck the gasket up to the crankcase first with rtv silicone and then lifted the pan up to the gasket. I think I also put extra silicone at the corners of the gasket and the pan end seals. Also, as I recall, 1 or 2 of the bolts for the pan come in from the top. good luck!
