I have started many a vehicle this way. Two batteries in series both with bad cells will start a car due to the 18 volts requiring much less amperage. Is it a good idea? Nope. On a modern car? Absolutely not. Will it get a you out of a sticky situation? Maybe.
My connection was neg cable to neg terminal of battery 1, pos terminal of battery 1 to neg terminal battery two, pos terminal of battery two to starter. Hit the key a disconnect as soon as possible.
Never had any problems or failures, but didn"t do it a whole lot, either.
