A year ago I had pain in back and around ribcage on right side . Hurt like hell, especially at night. Woke up in middle of night hurting so bad I about cried. Could not get comfortable in hardly any position. Pain was bearable during day when I was constantly in motion (dairy farm ). Thought it was spine/back problem. Went to chiropractor, but no relief. Went to M. D. about it. Removed my shirt for exam and I told the doctor that I thought I had some insect bites on my side. She saw them and said that the row of small bumps/sores were classic example of shingles. Virus infects the nerves , hence the pain. The virus erupts through the skin at nerve endings causing the sores. She prescribed some moderate strength pain meds for relief and sleep aid. They were not much effective. OTC Ibuprofen did more good. Worst daytime pain was when a cow swung her tail and struck me directly on the ribcage. AAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! Toughed it out for several weeks. No lingering effects.
