Didn't want to block yer post on your son's deer. That is one nice "speed beef " and a congratulate your son on his choice to make a clean kill.
The last time I went hunting I was very upset. My then FIL Scottish descendant said if it was raining he wasn't going out till later his word was carved in stone . I was to use his 270 and my boy was going to use my 30-30 but the gun was always picked up the day we left, as we all met at his house for coffee.
It was raining so I still went to the house and the lights were out so me and my boy went anyway me without Gun.-- a half hour after we settled in our "nest" out came a doe and the biggest buck I have ever seen with another doe in behind it. My son had the scope on it I saw several good shots he could have taken, I'm wispering as quiet as I could with the excitement of a 6 year old (I guess) Shoot -- shoot it was only 50 yds in front of us and coming straight at us walking and stopping to check out the area -- never saw us.
I thought my son had froze although he had shot a couple others before.
The buck then got spooked by another hunter that came in behind us not knowing we were there. and the deer took off running towards us and on past into the thickets.
I ask him why he didn't shoot He said dad all I could see was hair I wasn't sure if it was the buck or not.
I forgot to back off the power of the 3 to 9 variable scope as we shot or guns in on Thanksgiving day and I cranked it up to try to spot target.
Even in my anguish of not being able to take that shot. He showed me he had the power to control himself in such a circumstance, and was a man at 17.

This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
