This wasn't my fault, but I considered it trouble at the time. I was 17 years old and the bachelor farmer just north of us asked me to help him haul wheat from the field. He had a 1959 Ford F7 or 700 with a small 6 cylinder in it that was completely worn out, as was most of the truck. No mirror on the drivers door. Way over loaded with wheat, I wound her out tight in granny trying to get up a steep hill on the county road. About 5 feet from the crest of the hill, the thing stalled. I hit the brake pedal (probably harder than I should have) and the pedal hit the floor. I took a wild ride backwards and then I saw a car appear at the foot of the hill behind me. I steered it into the side ditch and through our new fence and down into our pasture. To this day i don't know how I kept from upsetting it--- i did spill some wheat. I saw a 40 foot scrub cedar tree in my one mirror and aimed for it. I snapped the tree completely off, but luckily the stump caught the front axle. Hard to get out of a truck with jelly for legs. I was unhurt, and for the most part the truck was undamaged--he fixed the broken brake line and used it for years after that. I never did drive it again. The owner is 83 now and once in a while at the feed mill in front of a bunch of old geezers, he'll rib me about wrecking his good truck.
