I was in 4th grade at the old Corydon Grade School, which took up half the block of Mulberry Street between Walnut and High. We were at recess after lunch, when a friend who'd gone inside to use the rest room came running out and told us "President Kennedy's been shot!" We all called him a liar.
Then as we filed back into the building, up the stairs and past th office, we say the principal, Art Crowley, standing in front of the TV we'd all watched the World Series on a few weeks earlier. Mr. Crowley had a tear running down his cheek. After a short time back in class, Mr. Crowley's voice came on the intercom and announced: "May I have your attention please? The President is dead...I repeat, the President is dead..." and his voice kinda trailed off.
As I rode the school bus home, seeing Civil Defense vehicles parked on a couple of street corners--nobody locally knew yet whether the country might be under attack or not--wasn't too reassuring to this [then] 9-year-old kid. I was scared.
