The alleged murder weapon was a Mannlicher-Carcano 6.5mm bolt-action rifle. Whether the actual rifle was the short rifle, the carbine, or the "shortened" rifle [one which had the barrel shortened by hacking it off, eliminating the accuracy the progressive-twist rifling...allegedly done to make the now-shortened rifle "more attractive" to American hunters and sportsmen...go figure].
The first reports identified the rifle found in the Texas School Book Depository as a 7.65mm Mauser. The first reports on the assassin that gave a description described the rifle as a 30 caliber. On the night of November 22, 1963, when police brought Buell Wesley Frazier in for questioning, they also brought in and examined Frazier's .303 Enfield.
