We plowed 8-9 inches deep in river bottom soils on wheat ground. The 4240 FWA pulled the plow better than the 4430 we traded it for. That 466 naturally aspired engine just kept pulling in 5th gear. We pulled a 7 shank JD V ripper with 5 shanks and an 18' 330 JD wing disc. 4240's were 110 horsepower but this one was 126 horse from the factory. We pulled a 1450 5-16"s with a 1972 JD 4020 P.S. FWA with a turbo. We pulled 6-18" 2450 onland plow with a 4640 and a 7-18" 2450 onland with a 4840. All FWA tractors. All our tractors had duals, fully loaded, fronts loaded and full sets of weights and added fuel tanks on the front. The 40 series power shift tractors were the best and toughest tractors JD ever built....James
