My wife and I recently applied for ours. Her idea, not mine. We have rental property in a not-so-nice area, and she is often there by herself or with only a female friend.
We spent a little time practicing before going to the class. When we went the range, the instructor, a former cop, told my wife that she could shoot better than half the cops! She got a big kick out of that.
Having a Concealed Pistol License in Michigan does simplify a couple of things: You don't have to get a purchase permit prior to buying handgun, and you can borrow someone else's pistol. The second item is no small thing: for example if you have a handgun registered in your name and your son takes it to the range with your permission, he could be picked up on a firearms violation if he gets pulled over and police find your gun in his car.
The process here is slightly complicated: You must first take an 8-hour course, which typically costs between 100 and 150 bucks per person. Then you go the the county clerk with your course certificate, application and passport photos. You pay the clerk $105, then take your receipt to the Sheriff's department and get fingerprinted. Assuming there are no problems it takes another month or two to get your permit. In some counties you have to appear before the CPL board as well. The license is good for five years, after which you have to take a refresher course and go through the application process again.
A friend of mine with a CPL took out a one million dollar umbrella liability policy. That's a good idea even if you don't carry a concealed weapon, and something I intend to do as well.
One fellow I know who teaches the course starts out by asking "how much does your ammo cost?". Of course he gets a variety of answers, then says "you're all wrong. Every round you shoot in the Real World will cost you on average 50 thousand dollars." Good way to think about it. There was a case this past year where a fellow with a CPL shot a guy (non-fatally) who was threatening him in a road-rage incident. He was tried and the case ended with a hung jury. He ended up plea bargaining to avoid a second trial. The guy's life has been pretty well wrecked because he didn't use very good judgement.

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
