I am a retired (21 years of service) US Navy Chief Petty Officer and I was in Kenya Africa in 1985. First thought is why MRE's but yes,..times have changed. It was nice an quiet when I was there on the aircraft carrier; USS Constellation.
MRE's are Meals Ready to Eat. They are expensive and they come in a case of 12 meals at was about 80 dollars in 2002. They meet all nutritional requirements for a hard working active duty service member. I found that most of the sailors I fed wanted these meals instead of the plain box lunch of ham and cheese sandwiches. MRE's are ok, but like anything they too can get tiresome to eat all the time.
I forgot to mention that my rate was a Mess Management Specialist, which was later converted to the title of Culinary Specialist.
These meals will make one solid, or air tight come bathroom time I promise, but so did Navy Boot Camp food!
