The only horse I ever really liked was "Champ"- one of those "if you ever decide to sell him" deals. Neighbor had him, and went into Holstein heifers so improved all the pastures to the point where there was no place they could put him that he wouldn't founder. So he called and said they had called the horsemeat packer, who said he was worth about $300, so I bought him for that. Strawberry roan Tennessee Walker gelding, I rode him for 17 years. Very well gaited, and could "walk" with the best of them. Including a fancy registered black stallion that a friend had, to his considerable consternation.
He actually liked kids- we used to have him loose in the yard in the summer, kids could climb up on him, ride him around with no saddle or bridle (steered by pulling mane one way or the other- stopped when you said whoa).
