There are some decent jobs but try and get one of them. The company I worked for closed 2 years ago. I was 44 then and I couldn't get anything. The only thing I could get was through a headhunter recruiting for an auto parts supplier. I never knew who the actual employer was going to be but was told I had the job. They also couldn't tell me exactly when I would be starting. I got onto a pullet vaccinating crew and have been doing that since. I don't mind the work but it isn't paying the bills and I am still waiting to start that parts company job.
I have put out lots of resumes been to several job fairs and even got a few interviews. The only offer I have had was from a temp agency that wanted me to quit my job and sit by the phone to wait for them to have a last minute cancellation. They tell you they can get my foot in the door somewhere and maybe someday I might get hired.
I live near London Ontario where the unemployment rate is almost 9%. I was working for another plant that closed 6 years ago and maybe 10% of the people that I worked with are making enough to support a mortgage now. A seat company held a job fair last February and I stood in line 5 hours before I got to the first stage of screening. There are some jobs but they don't pay more than minimum wage and if you are a little older there are lots of younger people employers could chose.
