Seems to me that folks who live "in town" as opposed to in the country do so because they don't want to be bothered to clear their own snow. Sounds like you have tried to be neighborly and help 'em out but of course I am only hearing your side of the story, not theirs. To make a proper judgment we all need to know more info. such as how old these neighbors are, what their physical health is like, if you are on good terms with them or not etc.
Before we moved to the country I always cleared more than my half of the driveway that was shared between the neighbor and myself. She was a widowed lady in probably her fifties and not in good health. When ever she saw me out there shovelling she always offered me the use of her snowblower, which I gladly accepted and proceeded to clear her driveway as well as mine.
Biggest problem living in a town is that you don't seem to get to know your neighbors as well as you do when you live in the country. I would take my tractor and plow out any of my neighbors, no questions asked and no money exchanged. They would also do the same for me if needed. Most country folks are not lazy, many city folks are!

Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
