it is my understanding the the rear axle was designed wrong. Basically pressed in a "U" shape, with the U up. Holds salt, etc. I doubt washing it would fix it. I'm not a big fan of gov intervention, but no one has ever been killed due to a rusted rocker panel failure. At least one person has been killed when their back axle broke in half on the highway. Had Ford put the rear axle together with the U down, so it didn't hold corrosive material, it'd all be ok. I expect sheetmetal to rust out, not major frame components.
