I believe both means of carry have their purpose, one offensive and the other more defensive, or maybe the terms agressive and passive would fit too.
Open carry,in my opinion, is a huge deterent. NC is an open carry state and when you look at most gun shops, many scrap yards, many independent pawn shops, and many other establishments such as that these, the employees cary openly. It"s an agressive tactic to carry openly, and very much taking an offensive gesture, telling the criminal," we take the initiative to arm ourselves first so you better think twice". Very rarely do these types of establishments get robbed because the criminals know, without a shadow of a doubt, that robbing the place will not be tolerated. Agressive, offensive, whatever term used open carry leaves no doubt as to the outcome of any wrong doing and is such is a huge deterent to all but the most hardcore criminals.
Concealed carry on the other hand is more defensive or passive. Both terms can be used because typically conceled carry holders only use the weapon for defensive purposes and only when provoked. In other words they "expect the best", don"t advertise the fact they are armed, and hope they never have to use it. On the passive side they remain ready for trouble and the criminals, knowing that the person they are looking to target MAY be armed is also a deterent. I say deterent because it won"t necesarly stop any criminal from trying something but, like I said before, except for the most hardened criminal, most petty thiefs who start something are gonna turn tail and run when confronted with an armed citizen. Beyond that it forces them to think long and hard about commiting any crime simply because they don"t know what they are going to run into. Now tell me what scares most people more than anything about any situation and prevents them from entering into a situation?.....The typical answer, I"ve always heard, is not knowing....
Now you really want to freak people out have three big guys walk into an establishment carrying empty holsters. Me and a couple buddies did that awhile back. The looks we got from people wondering exactly where the guns were, were priceless.....

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
