: : I just took the calcium out of my wheels & sandblasted them, but rust keeps developing around the pits. I don't want to paint them until I can get something to nuetralize the calcium cloride so it will stop rusting. Wondering about an automotive product called Rust-Mort that is supposed to stop rust, but will it nuetralize ? P.S. would like to know neck size of the fellow that came up with the idea of using calcium for ballast !!! : The best way to "neutralize" calcium chloride is use a lot of water. The salt is soluble, and wash the wheels well to remove any traces, then sand and prime. You're getting continued corrosion around the pits because either: 1. there is still salt in the pits, or 2. there isn't any salt in the pits, but you are just getting continued corrosion from the most likely spot (askj me for a discussion on a small anode and large cathode and pitting corrosion). : I agree that calcium choride is a poor choice; even ethylene glycol would be just as heavy and easier to work with. ::::: I'm probably wrong, but my understanding, is that calcium choride works just like ethylene glycol, being that its chief function is to lower the freezing point of water. One just existed before the other. As far as the pit holes, I think sandblasting, followed by a heavy build epoxy primer would fix the problem. At least until you could put your tires on and let enough time go by to forget about it. ::::Bonehead PS- Don't ever fix any thing so good that you deprive someone in the future, the pleasure that we are enjoying today.
