We're lucky enough to have 2 C/IH, 2 AGCO, 2 Deere, and a NH dealer within 50 miles or so..
Keep in mind, the newest equipment I have ever owned (aside my pickup trucks) was my early 80's grain drill.
Our closest Deere is what you'd call an independent. They were once employed by a dealer that closed down, opened up their own shop and get parts from a larger "chain" Deere store. No matter if it was parts for one of my "antiques", or the brand new 9430 articulating tractor I run at work, they've always fixed me up.
Our closest IH dealer, I don't care for how I'm treated when stopping there sometimes, as they were IH before the Case merger, and one parts man really seems to have NO INTEREST in trying to find parts for my 930 Case. The other parts man will look for parts for anything you want, so I guess it depends on what person behind the counter you deal with.
The other IH is also a AGCO dealer. They were Allis before IH, but took on IH in the 70's/80's (If I recall what I was told correctly). My best friend from high school works as a parts man there (and we're both younger than 30).. I can't speak for him as of now, but back then he really knew his older tractors, newer stuff, not so much. I'd buy most everything from there, as I have Allis, Massey, AC, Case, and CO-OP/Cockshutt anymore, but they don't deal with Massey (for reasons that were previously disclosed but I don't recall)
Our other AGCO dealer handles Massey, and you can often get someone on the phone even shortly after closing time, and they are more than happy to take your call (and your cash, when your parts come in). They treat me well, so nothin to complain about there
I don't spend a lot of money at any of these places, but I always figured every little bit counts. I guess with the "chain" stores that attitude is thrown out by someone who just "don't make enough to care".. Problem is you run into that attitude more and more anymore.

PS.. I sure LOVE having parts books.. I just call and give my part numbers, and usually I don't get a lot of "questions", plus, like others said, if I screw up, my bad, not theirs.. But sounds like some still get grief even with numbers in hand.
