Are you sure it was double wall pipe and not triple wall. Triple wall pipe works on the principle of cooling the smoke to keep the heat from getting to the outside layer of the triple wall. Cooling the smoke causes creosote buildup. It's a lot cheaper to buy than double wall which is insulated between the layers to keep the heat inside away from the house framing. The smoke stays warm and carries the creosote up to the chimney cap where it condenses on the Cap and causes less draft. On my double wall I only needed to clean it once a year in the pipe, but the cap I could hit with a long stick from the ground to clean it.
