Grandpa used to tell the story of some kids that hid in the loft of the old country school and waited for the teacher to come so they could do some harm to her. She showed up and heard them and got out of there, everyone always figured they were going to kill her and burn the school down. This wuld have taken place in the 1930's. My guess this has been going on in some way, shape, or form for as long as there have been schools. I would agree that the real tradgedy is his state of mind.
