What you are asking about are called heavy hex nuts. For a 3/8-24 size the hex is usually 11/16. I think the link below will take you to the right page but if not look at Mcmaster Carr's main site, click on nuts, and then on the size and thread your looking for and it'll bring up all of comparibles they carry.
Like another post suggested you would probably be better off to go with a standard nut with a hardened washer under it. Many heads are put on that way from the factory so it's not an uncommon thing to do. One reason I suggest this is with a heavy hex or a flange nut the torque required to get one of the nuts with a larger surface area required as 'tight' as a standard nut will be increased due to the larger surface area of the nut contacting the head and the extra amount of resistance having to be overcome to make up for it. It may only be a few ft-lbs of torque difference to overcome the extra resistance but it will be there to contend with.
