The Escape has the Duratec 3.0 engine. For the most part its a very good engine and usually runs 200K pretty easy without needing much work. Rebuilds are so expensive that its almost always cheaper to buy a new engine.
The Explorer has the 4.0 that started out as the Cologn V6 that many knew as the 2.9 in the Ranger and Bronco II. When Ford came out with the Explorer in 2001 they increased the displacement to 4.0. In 1997 they dropped the push rods and turned it into a OHC engine. The 4.0 is also a pretty good engine but lagged behind other makes in power and fuel mileage.
