We just went through the same issue on my wife's explorer with a over head cam engine in it. Going down the road and oil pressure went away. You can get the lower oil pan off and get a visual on the pickup, but that is it. The upper pan will not come out with the engine in the vehicle to get at the oil pump or anything else for that matter. Since pulling the engine was required to even start getting to the problem I just bought one out of a wreck and installed it. With hers I suspect that it lost a timing chain tensioner causing the loss of oil pressure as they are run off of oil pressure. The timing chains and tensioners in those engines are problematic from my experience. Both were replaced under warranty and were still real noisy on start up. The left cam runs off of the front of the crank and the right one runs off of the back of the crank. Only the left one can be replaced with the engine in place and a special tool set from Ford is required.
Good luck with it. I hope you find something simple.
