When the snow melts, probably tomorrow or next day,the ground will be "rotten" and the seed should penetrate the soil. Of course some may be lost to birds.
I have never tried it but some say they got good results.
The ground is almost bare from clearing small trees and my plan was to mix some rye grass seed with fescue and the rye grass should come up for winter coverage.
I know this is not as good as breaking ground and covering seed, but time wouldn't permit me to do this before winter.
I am just looking for a little protection and, as you stated, it may not be worth the effort.
