Contaminated fuel? I've always been pretty lucky there, but since you brought it up, there was a time when I was low on gas in a pickup couple of decades ago, so stopped at a Clark station and filled up. I'm sure that Clarks do just fine, even that one. But that day I must've gotten the bottom of the tank because I don't think I made it a mile down the road after that. Truck was running fine until I filled up, so what changed? I drained the tank and smelled more like water than gas. Filled it again, changed filter...Varoom, varoom, varoom. Things happen, but also do my best to keep the tanks as close to full as possible so don't have much metal to attract condensation.
Also had a place decades ago that had a fuel oil furnace. Used to let the water out and change the filter and add some denatured alcohol before winter. Nothing like having the filter freeze stopped up and shutting down the furnace on a real cold day. One time of that was enough for me.
