Sounds to me you haven't studied post WWI- pre WWII Germany very much. There are many similarities and parallels to what happened then, and what is happening now. So many, it's kind of scary - IF you actually pay attention.
Why do you suppose Hitler got so popular? Do you think the people wanted a murderous thug for their leader? No . . . things were tough, he spoke very well (with no tele-prompter) and gave the people "hope." Seems he had "audacity" also.
