John, I've thought about this before too. I sat down with a spreadsheet and did the math on this last night.
If it was me I would want at least 25 troops every 1/2 mile active at all times with the ability to shoot anything headed north (we wouldn't want to shoot the ones trying to return home, wouldn't want to scare the ones up here into NOT LEAVING).. The reason for the large numbers is we don't want some drug cartel coming in with 20 guys and automatic weapons and overrunning our 1 guy. We always need the upper hand. There's about 2000 miles. We need 24 hour protection, so 4 shifts is 100 troops per outpost. So that's 200,000 troops @$25000/year. (they don't have to be true military, unemployed bubba will work). That's $5,000,000,000 in salary. We need like you said trucks with 0.50 cals, I don't know what that would cost, assume $100k, and I'd want at least one at every post = $400,000,000. Some sort of watch tower at each post = $100,000 each = $400,000,000. Misc expenses of $500.000.000.
Add it all up and you get
$5,000,000,000
$400,000,000
$400,000,000
$500,000,000
$6,300,000,000 total annual cost -- Sounds like a lot until you look at how much we throw away on free health care, additional law enforcement, and all the other things that go along with illegals. Don't get me wrong, there are some good ones out there, but if they were THAT good, they'd come over here the right way.
Just for giggles, $6,300,000,000 divided by 100,000,000 taxpayers = $63/taxpayer. And we put 200,000 people to work.

Today's Featured Article - Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
