If there's a lot of snow before it gets real cold, it will insulate the ice. The only sure way to tell if it's safe is to drill several holes right through and measure it. Close to shore is usually the worst place. I cleared snow for the Numb Bum 24 hour motorcycle ice race and there was a lot of snow at one edge of lake because of trees. The ice on the lake was 30+ inches thick but under the deep snow the front wheels on the skid steer went fell through after I cleared it. I put the bucket down to lift them up and pushed myself back. Then I covered the thin area back with snow. There was a whole whack of vehicles in the main parking/pit area up to 1 and 1 1/2 ton trucks. Dave
