The gents are right in that you need to hold it in the position it has when on a tractor and turned of course in the correct direction. Ive seen the dogs get stuck which a good cleaning and light lube can cure. Its actually more centrifugal force that holds them IN to prevent them coming out when the RPM is around 250 and more so the impulse then stops functioning and she is in the run time advance mode versus the retarded static start timing. The run time advance is a function of which drive cup it has (like 25 or 35 advance) plus the mags rotational location in the govenor then points gap n wear n tear. The lag angle is adjustable by loosening the 4 screws and rotating the stop plate
