I was in Basic Training in the Army in 1969 when they went from a "service number" to using your SS# as your service number. To make us learn our SS#, we had to sing it out at full voice in the chow line, couldn't eat till we learned it. Some of the slow learners got pretty hungry.
Hard to believe, 40 years later, that hundreds of guys would shout out their SS number for all to hear. How times have changed. . .
I can't even imagine going through life without at least one credit card (won't get a debit card- too much liability if it falls in the wrong hands). Couldn't buy anything on-line, couldn't even buy a drink on an airplane. More hassle than I would care for.
