I watched a show last night about the Athabasca tar sands in Alberta. It is the largest foreign supplier, of any type of oil, to the US.
From the Syncrude site: Oil sand is composed of sand, bitumen, mineral rich clays and water. Bitumen, in its raw state, is a black, asphalt-like oil — as thick as molasses. It requires upgrading to make it transportable by pipeline and usable by conventional refineries. The upgraded bitumen product consists of naphtha, light and heavy gas oils that are combined to produce a light, sweet crude oil that we call Syncrude Sweet Blend.
There's a lot of negative propaganda against the oil sands but the fact is, oil supplies world wide are getting depleted but the world runs on oil. The Alberta oil sands is the largest construction project in the world. The GDP for Canada from the oil sands is 1.7 trillion dollars! Another fact, that is often disputed, is how much oil is in the Athabasca tar sands. It, by iteself, is the largest supply of petroleum reserves in the world by a big margin. The oil sands have proven reserves that are 8 times more than Saudi Arabia. That's a lot of petroleum! Apparently they want to triple production by 2020. Dave
