I worked for MoDOT for 33 yr. Either in contract administration or maintenance. As a Resident Engineer, I was in charge of 20-30 inspectors who made sure the jobs were built according to plan and spec. I had hundreds of millions dollars worth of projects in St. Louis City, County, and Jefferson Co. As District Maintenance Engineer, I managed 350-60 employees in 26 subunits (maint barns)in 13 counties in South Central Mo. The personnel problems were quite bad sometimes. I was on call 24/7 365. I dont miss that or fighting the winter weather. Salt cost MoDOT the same as asphalt. Hated waisting money on salt. Prefered to use same money to buy rock, oil, asphalt, etc. But at heart, was always a farmer. So I farmed on the side best I could. My son is following in my footsteps, working for MoDOT as an engineer. he has been there going on seven years now. How time flies! Here is a pic of him at work at his desk. He started pretty young.
