A couple of years ago, a co-worker gave me a '98 Monte Carlo with the 3.1 engine. He knew it had lower intake problems and since this was the second time it had happened to him, he was happy to get rid of it. By the time I drove it home (with the heat gauge fluctuating wildly the whole time) and dropped the oil, about 8 quarts of a chocolate milkshake came out of the oil plug. I replaced the lower intake manifold gaskets and it has been a good car ever since. My daughter has put about 25K miles on it since and it doesn't use any oil and gets decent gas mileage. Get the Fel-Pro replacements. I've told that the replacements from GM will work okay too. I'd bet money that the current intake gaskets in your car have the consistency of jello.
