I agree with JBMac... SKS can be had very cheaply. Fairly good gun, if you take the time to clean them up and make sure they're in good working order. I got several years back just before the ban, fresh out of the packing crates from factory. (Probably in storage for years.). Cleaned them up. refinished the wood, polished up the metal, and cold blued them. Worked pretty good. Only had one that had a problem with firing pin sticking, leading to unwanted conseqiences. New firing pin designed to cure the problem cured that problem. (Spring to assure that pin returned back into bolt after firing.) We have guys using them for deer hunting, so they poke enough punch. Somewhere near a 30-30. You don't need long range gun for protection. I'd start with a 870, or similar, rifle later.
