THEY DON'T KNOW!!! Since there is no written history and no scientific measurements from that time, all they have is a bunch of theories.
It is obvious that there was a time, many centuries ago, when there was a lot of ice covering a lot more of the Northern Hemisphere than there is now. There is a lot of evidence that the ice covering receded to much farther North, and this warmer climate probably made it possible for civilization as we know it to develop. But just why it got warmer is a whole lot harder to explain.
The press claims that there is widespread melting in the far North. I don't know if they are accurate, and I am a bit skeptical, because they have been quite inaccurate about other things they have reported. I would say that in my 60 years of experience in this area, the weather might be slightly warmer overall, however almost every year we set new record low temperatures for given dates of the year and just 2 years ago, we set the record yearly snowfall. I admit that these records are not much older than about 130 years, which might not be all that significant in terms of the Earth's climate. But it is what matters to me.
I believe that a bunch of factors control the Earth's climate, with the most important one being how much solar radiation the Sun happens to be putting out at a given time. Scientists have said that the Sun does vary in its intensity a bit, and again, they don't know why, but only have theories. It has been shown, in recent measured data, that volcanic activity can cool the planet a bit, from vaporized acids released into the atmosphere reflecting some of the sunlight (they believe). But the volcanic activity that has been observed only caused a couple of year's disruption, presumably because the volcanic particles of whatnot settled out of the air. There are probably lots of factors that influence climate and weather. I believe we might be in a slightly warmer part of the natural cycle than we were a hundred years ago.
I have a real problem with the idea that carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere because of human activity is what is causing the current slightly warmer temperatures. First of all, carbon dioxide makes up a very small portion of our air, and that portion is continually being diminished by green plants using it in production of carbohydrates. The air remains about 80% nitrogen and nearly 20% oxygen. I have a hard time believing that such a small fraction of the air that carbon dioxide fills could be that important.
On the other hand, I do see the possibility of a few powerful people making a whole lot of money by requiring the reduction or removal of carbon dioxide from industrial processes. I also see the possibility of the collapse of our way of life if those people are allowed to be in control. We are a nation that has been built and has been sustained on relatively cheap energy. We have enough coal for many centuries. And while most of the cheap and easy oil in this country has been tapped, supposedly there is a huge amount of less perfect oil that could be utilized. But if they make it too difficult to produce electricity, it wouldn't matter what resources we have, energy would be extremely expensive.
I thank God that the American people were smart enough not to elect Al Gore. And I hope that our future choices for high offices will be good ones.
