My grandfathers died before my parents were even married so I never had one to pal around with and learn from. Thankfully I get to spend lots of time with my grandsons.
My dad was 47 when I was born so he sort of became my grandfather in some respects.
For both my mother and later for my father I made small photo albums of family, old vehicles, etc. for them to view while in long term care facilities. Visiting about old times gave them enjoyment too. When I cared for them I'd generally make dinner (noon) an occasion to set around for about an hour talking about the old days. Dad was born 1898 and mom 1906, so it was old times.
We kept them at home as long as we could with myself and hired help but eventually there comes a time more help is needed than can readily be provided in a home environment. No one should feel guilt for seeking other arrangements when that time comes.
My dad lived to be age 97 and spent about 2 years in a facility, a nice comfortable one.
