We have a greenhouse and do truck patch farming too. We have tried many different weed control methods to limit chemical use. Like Allen said other vegetation take up nutriants and moisture that your crop needs. Landscape fabric work about the best to control weeds but will allow water to pass through to the soil. We lay the fabric between the rows and tight against the plants. You will still have weeds come up in the rows which you can manual remove. I have also played with a weedwick and round-up to control weeds by touching the weeds you want to burn down. A trip to a pumping supply store and about 10 buck will make about 3 or 4 of them. You won't need to worry about run off with this method since you are applying the chemical only to the unwanted weed and not by a spray. If you stay on a regular schedule you can be fairly free of weeds. But nothing beats a hoe and lots of time in the garden to keep the weeds out with out use of chemicals.
