The only noisy 350 Vortec I have ran into ended up having spun cam bearing,,, I removed the valve covers,,, valve springs, valve guides and lifters checked OK... High mileage engine so customer went with a new bullet. He kept the old engine for the heads and found the bad cam BRG. when he took it apart.... His heads were cracked but he had never had a coolant/heating issue...
Mine has close to zero OP hot in the summer,,, I traded for it knowing it would need a engine someday but have drove it 4/5 years this way... I don't drive much tho can't afford to feed it :wink: ... I have a few extra bullets to build if and when it croaks out...
Even if a good wrench showed up with his doctors bag internal engine noise are hard to confirm like you describe... I don't know of a pattern internal failer nor have a best guess,,, just hope its something external a converter...
