As far as the financial system is concerned... that can be changed by the government of the day to meet the needs of the time. It's been done before. It will be done again whenever a sufficient panic ensues that it becomes necessary or oppertune. You should keep in mind that a stash of cash will devalue exactly the same as a bank account... and the government could just as easily 'steal' that from you in the form of removing it's value. You might also stop and ask yourself what role gold and silver play in your typical every day african's life where currency is esentially worthless and life is measuerd from one meal to the next. I suspect the answer is 'not much'. We're not so far away from that lifestyle if things really did collapse here. I think you'll find that knowledge... of how to repair things, build, grow crops... in the absence of most conventional resources will be the greatest value. Having a broad working knowledge of many things today has also become quite rare... because everyone is taught from cradle to grave that they have to be experts at one thing and rely on other experts for everything else they need.
