: : I have decided that I need a small tractor to help maintain my property and I was hoping that some of the knowlegable readers of this list could give me some recommendations. I have never owned a tractor before so please excuse my ignorance.

: : The machine will be used primarily for mowing grass, plowing snow and some landscaping. The property has a lot of trees so it needs to be fairly manouverable to mow around them. I am not looking to spend a lot of money and I have seen quite a few tractors that are over 40 years old that are still quite servicable, so an older machine will do just fine. I am told that live hydraulics and a three point hitch are important features. What other features should I consider? What makes and models of tractors would suit my application and why? I would like to get a common model so that parts availability won't be a problem.

: : Any help is greatly appreciated.

: : Thanks in advance,

: I use a 47 Farmall Cub around my property. I use it to plow snow, move lose dirt around, plow my garden, mow lawn etc. and I love it. It doesn't have a 3 point hitch and live hydraulics would be nice. I would think one of the smaller Ford N's would be a good choice for you, as they have a 3 point hitch. Plus they typically sit alot lower and might be better for mowing around trees etc. A Cub low boy would also not be bad for the mowing end of it. With a Cub, there are alot of implement available, but they are more specific to the tractor and would not be as universal as the 3 point attachments. I don't miss having a 3 point hitch that much, but depending on what all you are using the tractor for, it might be a little more important to you. There are a ton of N's around and parts availability is great. I have never owned one, but have friends and neighbors that have them and they seem to be a very dependable unit. Hope this helps.

I am parcel to Farmalls. I use a 47 model A. Any of the Farmall series A, B, C would be a good choise. The Allis series A, B, C, CA is also good for your needs. I suggest getting a couple of good antique tractor books so you can have pictures of these differant models. Look at the power to weight ratio. Lighter weight and higher horsepower make the best setup for mowing. Visit some local implement dealers for advise. Also, if there is a Woods dealer near you, they can give you good information on good mowing tractor setups.

Today's Featured Article - Old Time Threshing - by Anthony West. A lovely harvest evening late September 1947, I was a school boy, like all school boys I loved harvest time. The golden corn ripens well and early, the stoking, stacking,.... the drawing in with the tractors and trailers and a few buck rakes thrown in, and possibly a heavy horse. It would be a great day for the collies and the terrier dogs, rats and mice would be at the bottom of the stacks so the dogs, would have a busy time hunting and killing, all the corn was gathered and ricked in what we c ...
