6 years ago, after using my rusty but trusty 30-30 Marlin for 30+ years I wanted a newer rifle. Mainly because my eyes have changed and I wanted something I could put a scope on. I went back and forth on the caliber but finally settled on .270 cal. Plenty of stopping power for deer be they close or a few hundred yards away. I think if I planned to hunt elk I would go with 30-06. I bought a new Tikka T3. It's a fine piece of machinery. Just wish I could use it more than a few days a year.
