1. Download a "live CD" or "live DVD" version of any one of the popular Linux distributions.
2. Burn image to disk.
3. Insert CD or DVD into problem computer and hit the reboot button.
4. Give it a whirl without installing. See if Linux will meet your needs. Note that the Live CD/DVD will be MUCH slower than a regular install, because CDs and DVDs are much slower than hard disks.
5a. If you like what you see, reboot and run the install.
5b. If you don't like it, eject the CD/DVD and throw it in the trash. (Of course there are hundreds of distributions left to try, if you're still curious.)
My recommendation for the best Linux distribution for a first-timer is Mint. It's not what I use (I use Fedora), but it is an excellent choice for someone new to Linux.
