When I was a kid - we had a neighbor who had a drilled deep well with no pump in it. He had a simple little roof over the well, with a well pulley, and the bucket looked like a piece of round galvenized downspout about four feet long. It had a round ball in the bottom of it. He'd drop it in the well and the ball would rise up letting the "downspout" fill. As he raised it, the ball would seal the bottom and hold the water. He'd drop the bottom of the "downspout" in a five gallon bucket - that would dislodge the ball and allow the water to flow into the bucket. I've hoisted a lot of water out of his well in my younger days.
It would NOT work if a pump/lines were already installed in the well.
I'd like to find one of those "downspouts". That's the only live one I've ever seen.
Lehman's, the Amish store in Ohio, has them in their catalog for upwards of $100.
If our grid ever goes down, from trying to charge all these electric cars, I'll get thirsty before I get one made.
