The Amish ways can seem a little odd, but for them it is all about not being pride full, and they are suposed to shun comforts. they can not have phones hook up to the electric grid,because these are all more or less goverment endorsed/suported things, and they are not to join in. Like wise insurance. The Amish do not consider this life we live as all there is for them, just a journey they are on to the next world, with Christ the Lord and savior. We have many Amish neighbours in are area. They never take any goverment money, health care, old age pension,ect. Pay their taxes and their own way, more folks did the same maybe our countrys would not be so hard up. But they will not take up arms to defend their country, do not agree with that myself.
