I knew an old gent who always said he wouldn't be caught dead, in a seat belt! And even cut the ones out of his old car. One night, he was pulling out of his favorite bar, and a car coming along the road hit his car on the drivers side, sort of turning his car into the same direction of movement. This swung his old car around, the door popped open, and old guy fell out between the cars, and got fully squashed when they came together! Yep--he wasn't caught dead in his seat belt! Remember? He cut them out of his car! Heck, as soon as my kids got to where they could sit up in the cars, i put homade seat belts in both vehicles. Made my own, and nobody went anywhere until they were on and fastened. We lived near the big city, and safety was and is my greatest priority. Out in the country might be safer, but what about some half drunk city guy coming back from a drinking party, or a weekend, with a snoot full? And he hits ya!? OHH, yeah! You are just as dead as that groundhog ya ran over, the week before! We've had a lot of deaths of motorists lately, here-a-bouts, because the belts were lying on the seat! And, tests have shown you are much safer and likely to survive a roll-over crash, or even a side or front head on crash. The belts keep you from getting impaled on the gear shifter, or hitting the dash at speed, or getting tossed out. The newer cars are made with high-strength steel, and don't crush easily! Our local fire companies, who usually get called out on all of the wrecks, had to buy stronger "Jaws of Life", so they'd be able to cut open a mangled car to gain access to the injured folks inside! The original tools wouldn't cut the new steel parts. But, like they say:"This is a free country"!Everybody is free to decide if they want to leave early, or stay around to see their babies fully grown!
