Owned a 97 the first year for the 4.0 SOHC engine. Bought it Germany. Since it was an export model, rev limiter was disconnected and a 160 MPH speedo. Drove the autobahn at times 130 mph plus all day long. Shipped it back to the states in 2000. Drove it another 3 years until I bought a 2003 which I still have love them. Yea 14 mpg's around town/short trips, interstate 20 mpgs. Also leasted 36 Escapes for my personnel in Bosnia/Croasia in 95-99. They had the 2.3 litre diesels in them (35 MPGS loaded with gear/tools). Great vehicles also, just considered them smaller versions of the Explorer. We never got the Escapes here in the US until 2000. The European versions of the Escapes, Explores, and Focuses have diesels. Wish we could get them here, but the UAW won't allow those engines since they're made in Germany and Italy.
