A battery is needed to control voltage. It might be OK, but if (for instance) it had an alternator, the alt would fry and possibly make way over voltage W/O battery control. If it had a mag, there would be no issue. I would take a ballast resistor with me and try running it with the resistor in place, or purchase a 12v no resistor required coil (~15$) and drive it. A trailer would rent for far more than a new coil!! Jim
